Both the LSU men’s and women’s tennis teams lost Saturday, 5-2, at Texas A&M. The loss was the first this season for the men’s tennis team and the second for the women’s team.
The two teams played simultaneously and their play seemed to mirror each other all day long.
The LSU men’s team (5-1) lost the doubles point to start the day. No. 73 Sebastian Rutka and Cory Ross recorded the only doubles win for the Tigers, defeating John Nallon and Matt Loucks, 8-1.
The No. 24 duo of Bryan Fisher and Jason Hazley lost to the No. 5 doubles team of Lester Cook and Ante Matijevic, 8-5.
However, the day was not plagued completely with upsets.
The only two points of the day for the Tigers came when Ross defeated Nallon in singles play 7-6, 6-2. Also, in one of the few bright spots on the weekend for the Tigers, Peter Richman came back to upset No. 71 Lester Cook 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The LSU women’s team (5-2) started the day by winning the doubles point. Daysi Espina and Camila Caliari defeated Nicki Mecham and Seva Iwinski 8-4. Amanda Mang and Jessica Ferguson beat Jessica Roland and Roberta Spencer 8-6 to clinch the doubles point for the Lady Tigers.
Things went south for the Lady Tigers following the early victories. LSU only won one singles match when Caliari defeated Iwinski 6-4, 7-6. No. 116 Rocio Fentili lost to No. 108 Jessica Roland 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to end the day for the Lady Tigers.
Both teams will be in action against Tulsa Saturday, Feb. 22, at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium at 1 p.m. The Lady Tigers will play SMU Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.
