Danny Bryan and Cory Ross are making a habit of winning. For the second weekend in a row, the duo claimed the doubles championship in a tournament.
Freshman Bryan and senior Ross defeated Amanjot Singh and Evghenii Corduneanu of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette 9-8 in the finals of the Ragin’ Cajun Tennis Classic Sunday. Last weekend the duo won the doubles title at Tulane’s Beau Holton Memorial Tournament.
“The other guys competed really hard,” said LSU assistant coach Mark Booras. “They didn’t give us an inch. I was pleased with the way our guys competed. They had a couple of lapses in the second match, but they were able to recover to get the championship.”
For Ross, it was the second year in a row he claimed a championship at the Ragin’ Cajun Tennis Classic. Last year he won the singles title. But he was unable to defend that title this season, falling in the semifinal round to David Corrie of Texas-Arlington.
“Cory had a good run in singles in this tournament,” Borras said. “His opponent was just too consistent today.”
Bryan and teammate Bryan Fisher advanced past the first round in singles play. But both players were bounced in the second round. Bryan lost to Haris Huremovic of Southeastern Louisiana University 4-6, 6-4, ret.
Bryan retired due to cramping. Fisher withdrew from his second round match against David Canudas of the University of Southern Mississippi.
“Fisher had a very tough first round,” Booras said. “It lasted three hours but it was really nice that he could pull that out.
“Danny Bryan had a good win in the first round, and I think he learned a little more about college tennis today and the intensity you need to compete at this level. The weather got the best of him, but we are looking forward to getting him in shape so he can compete at this level more consistently.”
The men’s tennis team travels to College Station, Texas next weekend for the Texas A&M Invitational to close the fall schedule for the Tigers.
“This was a great warmup for our last tournament of the fall,” Booras said. “Our guys will have some confidence going into next weekend.”
