Normally at award shows all eyes are on the dresses, tuxes and hair, but at this year’s Emmys people couldn’t stop talking about the earrings. As the leading women of Hollywood sashayed down the red carpet last week, their necks got a great workout from just holding up those huge accessories.
“Sex and the City” costar Kristen Davis stole the show with her purple Fred Leighton earrings. The earrings fell three-fourths down her neck like golden fingers wrapped in a purple-jeweled glove.
The lack of a red carpet in Baton Rouge shouldn’t discourage the women of LSU from enjoying this form of massive outer ear expression. This trend is completely appropriate for clubbing, partying and even just looking good around the town.
There are two types of mammoth earrings: chandelier and dangles. Chandeliers are not only long and swinging, but wide and beaded and they really do resemble chandeliers. Dangle earrings must fall over halfway down the neck, otherwise they are just semi-dangles.
A beautiful pair of really long or chandelier earrings can compliment any solid colored outfit or skimpier tops like halters or tanks. But it is important to ensure a top is not too busy or the earrings will clash.
Another important rule of showing off a great big pair of earbobs is to wear fully or partially pulled back hair. There is no reason to hide fabulous earrings underneath lots of hair. A ponytail, messy bun or any updo are the easiest ways to sport flashy ear ornaments gracefully.
Adding a necklace only competes with the earrings and looks silly.
With all the boutiques and clothing stores around Baton Rouge, ladies do not have to travel far to own a piece of the growing trend.
Minutes away from campus, Material Girl has a tiny yet notable selection of big earrings.
The most eye-catching earrings in the boutique were the silver circles. The suspended solid circles were long enough to float above the collar and they had a mod sixties appeal. Although the clothes at Material Girl can be pricey, the Dollhouse earrings are reasonable at $12 to $15.
The Mall of Louisiana is a great place to shop around for massive earbobs because of its many shops.
Express specializes in trendy clothes and chic clubwear suprisingly though, it lacks a selection of mammoth earrings.
Another fashionista of women’s clothes is Bebe, which is new in the Mall. The store had only a few pairs of earrings, but only six pairs were large and they range from $24 to more than $40.
The best stores in the mall for this massive earring trend are Claire’s and Icing. Both of these stores are part of Claire’s stores Inc. and offer the same selection.
This earring collection is phenomenal, and the designers are not afraid to go where no earring has ever gone before. A shopper can find any shape or color imaginable of extremely large earrings and only pay $5 to $12.
And the chandeliers are incredible. Pick a color, any color, and they have it. Pink and pewter, silver with crystals, black and pewter and red and black are some of the color combinations offered.
The winner of the best massive earring in Baton Rouge goes to Icing for their bright silver and blue rhinestone pair of chandeliers. These danglers stretch three-fourths down the neck and are quite eye-catching, but in a good way. The silver and blue winner would be perfect paired with a white or baby blue top or dress.
The red carpet is a great place to learn the season’s trends, but women should never be intimidated by extreme fashions. Just because Baton Rouge is not a fashion hub like New York City and Los Angeles shouldn’t mean Southern ladies can’t look fabulous in a big fat pair of earrings.
