Serial killer suspect Derrick Todd Lee is facing new charges in connection with a July 2002 attack on a Breaux Bridge woman.
Lee was charged Oct. 1 in St. Martin Parish with attempted aggravated rape and attempted second-degree murder.
St. Martin Parish Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars said the charges stem from a July 2002 attack in which Lee allegedly used a false story to enter the home of a Breaux Bridge woman and attempted to rape and kill her.
Cedars said authorities began to suspect Lee in the attack after comparing DNA samples taken from Lee to DNA evidence taken from the Breaux Bridge crime scene.
Cedars said they will have an arraignment and set a trial date for Lee in the Breaux Bridge attack.
Lee also is accused of the murders of Gina Wilson Green, Charlotte Murray Pace, Pam Kinamore and Carrie Lynn Yoder, all of East Baton Rouge Parish, and Trineisha Dene Colomb of Lafayette Parish.
Lee is scheduled to go to trial for Pace’s murder in March 2004. He was indicted in September for Colomb’s murder, but a trial date has not yet been set.
Cedars said although all of the cases are “independent prosecutions,” his office still is working closely with the Lafayette and East Baton Rouge Parish district attorney’s offices.
East Baton Rouge Parish Assistant District Attorney John Sinquefield said he is cooperating fully with Cedars’ office and has exchanged police reports with St. Martin Parish authorities.
“I think all the cases complement each other,” Sinquefield said.
Cedars said the multiple cases are not a “race to the courthouse” and that he will do nothing in his prosecution that would compromise the other cases.
“We are committed to bringing this man to justice in every single jurisdiction where he committed a crime,” Cedars said.
