The societal atmosphere of the 1920’s shines through in Swine Palace’s first production of the season, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Swine Palace will premiere “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” Friday at the Reilly Theatre.
The production crew is holding a sneak preview tonight.
Swine Palace Director of Marketing and Public Relations Adam Miller said the play is very timely and relevant, but also includes elements of fun and humor.
The play is set in 1927 and centers on the character Ma Rainey and her band. The story follows the characters and the interpersonal and societal conflicts they struggle through.
“There are serious issues [in the play], such as racism, that relate to students and the larger community,” Miller said. “But it is also interesting and fun.”
Miller said this is a professional production and gives students the opportunity to see their peers performing with seasoned actors that have appeared on television shows such as “Law and Order.”
The show runs through Oct. 12 at the Reilly Theatre.
Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets are $12 for students, $19 for seniors and $27 to $30 for adults.
Tickets for the event can be purchased through Ticketmaster, or by calling 578-3527.
