Despite the wind, clouds and occasional raindrops, members of various sororities and one fraternity gathered in the Greek Theater Friday afternoon in an attempt to promote unity between the organizations.
Krystale Prudhomme, a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and chair of the event, said it was designed to establish Greek unity between black and white fraternities and sororities.
Prudhomme said only a few organizations responded to the invitation to take part, including Kappa Delta, Delta Gamma, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Sigma Gamma Rho sororities and Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
Three members of Sigma Gamma Rho sorority kicked off the event with a lively dance routine, followed by members of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority dancing to rap music and declaring themselves “zesty, beautiful and sexy.”
The highlight of the event came when black and white members of Delta Sigma Theta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Delta and Delta Zeta sororities joined together for a singing and dancing routine.
The performance was met with raucous cheers and applause from the audience, and participants shared hugs and laughter.
Prudhomme said the event was “way overdue,” but she hoped similar events could become larger in the future.
Kate Jordan, a member of Kappa Delta sorority, said she thought the sororities on campus could be more unified, and she thought Friday afternoon’s event was a step in the right direction.
Brittany Stevie, a member of Phi Mu sorority, said although she thought the event was a good idea, the success of it and similar events depended upon the response of individual members.
Afterwards, many Greeks had a positive response to the experience.
“It was definitely enlightening and a different experience,” said Kappa Delta member Ashley Cutler. “I enjoyed working with everybody, and I made some new friends.”
Delta Sigma Theta member Adrienne Gobert said she enjoyed working with other sororities she did not normally work with.
“I liked meeting other people, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves,” Gobert said.
Gobert said she thought similar events could happen in the future, and she hoped more initiatives could take place to help unify the Greek organizations.
Prudhomme said although she wished more Greek organizations had participated in the event, she thought the overall outcome was positive.
“I think everyone showed unity,” Prudhomme said. “Everyone clapped for everyone else.”
