The women’s half of the LSU swimming and diving team finished 24th at the NCAA Women’s Championships held in College Station, Texas, Thursday through Saturday.
On Thursday, junior diver Jessica Wantz finished fifth in the one-meter dive to earn All-American honors for the second year.
Diving coach Doug Shaffer said Wantz performed well.
“She did a magnificent job,” Shaffer said. “Her focus has been excellent, and I expect her to continue that momentum into the three meter [Friday].”
Senior Stephanie Smith finished 49th in the preliminaries of the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:14.55.
Friday, Wantz earned All-American honors again in the three-meter dive. She scored a career high 540.15 to finish third place in the event, the highest she has ever finished.
Wantz said she was happy with her performance.
“This feels pretty good,” Wantz said. “There is always room for improvement, but I liked where I finished. It’s great to be named All-American twice at this meet.”
Shaffer said Wantz did well in a talent-stacked competition.
“This is a terrific contest when you look at the talent up there,” Shaffer said. “Jessica was absolutely outstanding, while her focus was there all along. She represented LSU very well [Friday].”
On Saturday, senior swimmer Stephanie Smith finished her career with a 26th-place finish in the 1500-meter freestyle with a time of 16:31.18.
Auburn won the national championship with a score of 569, while Georgia came in second and Arizona finished third. Florida, Stanford, California, UCLA, Texas, Southern Cal, and Wisconsin, rounded out the Top 10.
Southeastern Conference foes South Carolina (11th), Alabama (21st), Arkansas (27th), and Tennessee (28th) also had athletes in the meet.
