This Sunday the East Campus Apartments will hold their first ever “Battle of the Bands” competition.
Hosted by the Communication Council, Residential life, the Residential Hall Association and the Resident Assistants at ECA, the event will take place at 2 p.m. in the ECA courtyard.
The deadline for entering the contest was April 23. All band members must live on campus and at least one member must live in ECA.
According to RA Danny Fields, each band who signed up will be judged on Saturday.
Performing at the competition will be local bands Ice Cream Spectacular, Armadillo Highway, The Gold Standard and Pimp, My Sister.
The bands will be judged on style, originality and musicality, Fields said.
There will be several judges rating each band, including Student Government President Brad Golson, Director of Residential Life Deb Baker and the Assistant Director of West Campus Apartments, Richard Swearingen.
In addition to the musical entertainment, the battle of the bands will also include a free crawfish boil for the residents of ECA.
“This is the second time we’ve had a crawfish boil,” Fields said. “But, this is the first time we’ve ever put on a battle of the bands.”
David Desporte, drummer for Ice Cream Spectacular said last year’s crawfish boil sparked ideas for the band competition.
“In the beginning we wanted to do a crawfish boil,” Desporte said, who is also an RA for ECA. “Then, we had to come up with an idea to keep people there and for the residents to meet lots of people.”
Desporte said Sunday’s concert attendees should expect an alternative sound from Ice Cream Spectacular.
Fields expects a large turnout for Sunday’s show.
“We are anticipating a good crowd,” he said. “It’s going to be a really good event.”
If Sunday goes well, students can anticipate another battle of the bands next year.
“Depending on the success, I’d like to do this again,” Desporte said. “Anyone I’ve talked to said they’ll go, so I’m expecting it to be pretty crowded.”
