LSUPD is continuing an investigation after giving an LSU offensive lineman a citation for simple battery this past weekend.
David Kency, who is not a student, said Terrell McGill punched him in the mouth early Sunday morning at the West Campus Apartments, LSUPD Maj. Mark Shaw said. Kency said other people then kicked and punched him.
Dispatched officers arrived around 3 a.m.
Shaw said no one else received a citation.
Michael Bonnette, LSU Sports Information director, said questions related to McGill’s citation would be addressed via Tuesday’s online archive of the 2004 SEC Spring Football Coaches Press Conference at www.secsports.com.
The 1-hour-and-23-minute teleconference — during which reporters questioned coaches from the 12 SEC universities — focused on spring practices.
Coach Nick Saban answered a question about McGill’s citation during the call-in conference.
Saban said he was under the impression that McGill was being a “good guy” trying to “break up” a fight and that the media was trying to make an issue out of “something that’s not very much.”
“I don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said.
The LSU football team is held to high standards, Saban said, and if he determines McGill did not live up to those standards, he will be dealt with internally.
But, Saban said as far as he is concerned, McGill’s citation is no different from “a traffic ticket.”
A University student who reportedly witnessed the fight could not be reached for comment by press time.
