The LSU softball team earned its 12th straight victory Sunday, getting past the Wildcats of Kentucky 6-2 on Sunday at the Kentucky Sports Complex to complete the weekend sweep.
With the win, LSU (39-7, 16-4 Southeastern Conference) extended its SEC road winning streak to nine games, dating back to March 27 at Alabama.
Coach Yvette Girouard said she was impressed with the sweep.
“It was another good sweep for us on the road,” Girouard said. “It seemed like we were just going through the motions at times today, but we did come away with the sweep against Kentucky in Lexington when a lot of other SEC teams have had trouble with that this year.”
LSU is coming off a sweep of the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville last weekend.
Led by junior Leigh Ann Danos, the Tigers got the sweep with the 6-2 win on Sunday.
Danos broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning with a three-run home run, giving LSU a 4-1 lead.
Senior Kristin Schmidt earned the complete-game victory, improving her record to 23-4 on the year.
With eight strikeouts in the outing, Schmidt needs just six more to become the 20th pitcher in NCAA Division I history with 1,000 career strikeouts.
Danos finished the game going 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Tigers began the series with a 9-1 thumping of the Wildcats in the first game Saturday, ending the game in six innings.
After falling behind 1-0 in the fourth inning, sophomore Lauren Castle, who went 3-for-3, began the sixth-inning rally with a base hit to left field. Following a bunt single by freshman Leslie Klein and an infield single by Lauren Delahoussaye, sophomore Stephanie Hill broke the scoreless drought with a single, scoring Castle to tie the game.
Hill finished the game going 3-for-3.
Five hits and two walks later, LSU blew the game open to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
In the second game, LSU jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as LaDonia Hughes scored on a throwing error by Kentucky pitcher Gretchen Prugh, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Hughes finished the game going 1-for-3 with an RBI in the leadoff spot.
LSU added three more runs in the second as the Wildcats committed three errors in the inning, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers put the game away in the fifth, scoring five runs to cap its second straight six-inning finish.
Girouard said she was pleased with the way they competed on Saturday.
“It was good to come here and get the sweep on Saturday,” Girouard said. “We made it a little scary in the first game, but after we had hit the ball hard all game long, we finally got some breaks in the sixth inning. I liked the way we came back in the second game and took advantage of the Kentucky miscues.”
