The LSU men’s and women’s golf teams will be featured on the Golf Channel’s show College Central Presented by Ping that airs every Wednesday at 9:30 p.m.
The show takes viewers on tours of different collegiate campuses every week, showcasing college golf teams from around the country. College Central is also unique because it allows the golfers themselves to host the show.
For this LSU segment, airing Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 9:30 p.m., junior golfers Jason Horrell and Brooke Shelton played the role of hosts. The duo showed the College Central crew around the LSU campus, starting with a visit to Mike the Tiger’s cage where they explained the history behind LSU’s 400-pound mascot.
After wrapping up with Mike, the junior golfers headed across the street for a quick interview with LSU football coach Nick Saban. Saban answered their questions about the national championship and gave words of encouragement for the golfers on their season.
Following their session with Saban, the golfers gave a short tour of the quad and parade ground and looked at several of LSU’s more famous landmarks, most notably the War Memorial, Greek Theatre and Indian Mounds. The show also filmed segments at the Cox Communications Academic Center and the Lawton Room, the site of the 2003 National Championship Trophy.
Horrell and Shelton concluded the day with a tour of LSU’s golf facilities at the University Club.
College Central producer Alan Robison said he was impressed by the LSU campus.
“LSU has a very nice campus,” Robison said. “This campus, I thought had a lot of different aspects to it, and it was very pretty. I had never been here before, and I wouldn’t say I was surprised because I half-expected it to be this way, but it was nice.”
Robison also said he was impressed with the television talents of Horrell and Shelton.
“They did a really good job,” Robison said. “Some of these kids, you go and you find some of them take to the camera well, and some of them need a little coaching. Neither one of them, I felt, really needed a lot of coaching. They had their stuff down.”
Horrell said he had a good time playing host for a day.
“I enjoyed it,” Horrell said. “It was fun getting to show them around the campus, and letting other people see how beautiful campus is.”
Shelton also said she enjoyed being in front of the camera.
“I thought it was fun,” Shelton said. “I think it’s neat for other people to be able to see what our campus is like, so I’m glad that we got the opportunity.”
The LSU segment will air Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 9:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
The men’s golf team returns to action Feb. 8-10 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Ponte Vedra, Fla. The women’s team will participate in the Tulane Invitational Feb. 9-10 at the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans.
