Student Government’s “Celebrate Louisiana Week” is displaying the unique aspects of Louisiana’s culture this week, featuring food, entertainment and music native to Louisiana.
“Student Government’s ultimate goal is to promote awareness of Louisiana’s culture and provide students with interesting programs,” said Brad Golson, SG assistant director of special projects and head of the project.
Tuesday’s festivities take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the Lost Bayou Ramblers band and a Louisiana delicacy, king cake, in Free Speech Alley.
Chancellor Mark Emmert will speak to students and answer questions as part of “Chats with the Chancellor” as students enjoy their king cake. “Chats” is an SG program started last semester to facilitate conversation between students and the chancellor.
East Laville, Evangeline, Herget, Miller, East Campus Apartments, Acadian, West Campus Apartments and Graham residential halls will show “Steel Magnolias,” a Louisiana-based movie, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in their lobbies.
Cajun storyteller Dianee de la Cassas will entertain students Wednesday in the Union’s International Room from 3 to 5 p.m. Dave Petitjean, a Cajun comedian, will be in the Union’s Tiger Lair from 7 to 8 p.m.
The week’s celebration will end Thursday with music from the Choupique Cajun Band and Cajun dance instructors from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Union’s Tiger Lair. SG will be offering students free jambalaya and gumbo.
An archive of photographs of Louisiana’s countryside and bayous taken by The Baton Rouge Advocate photographers are on display in Swine Palace throughout the week.
