The Parade Grounds resembled a watermelon patch Saturday whenLambda Chi Alpha hosted its eighth annual Watermelon Bust.
Ryan Zumo, a business junior and Watermelon Bust chairman, saidnine sororities competed in a variety of events throughout theweek, including a canned food drive and performance skit. Thebiggest event of the week was the Watermelon Bust.
Zumo said proceeds benefit the Bishop Ott Shelter, a localshelter for homeless men.
Lambda Chi Alpha raised money by selling ads for the event andholding a canned food drive, Zumo said. Sororities also madedonations, he said.
Lambda Chi also will be having an auction for items such as freetanning and dinner at various restaurants.
The Watermelon Bust included a variety of games such as a slipand slide, a dunking booth, tug-of-war, a belly flop into a poolfilled with watermelon and a watermelon toss.
The tug-of-war competition did not last too long, because therope broke after the first teams competed.
“Lambda Chi put on a great event, even though it was a littlemessy,” said Ashley Brown, a biological science senior and KappaAlpha Theta president.
Brown said her favorite game was the dunking booth because shewas able to get clean.
“This is a fun way to bring the Greek community together,” saidChristine St. Germain, a political science junior and Kappa KappaGamma recruitment chairwoman. “With such a strong showing, a goodtime is almost guaranteed.”
Chris Rodrigue, a biological science senior and Kappa Delta teamcaptain, said his team had the best participation.
“The girls had a great time,” Rodrigue said. “It’s great that wewere still able to raise lots of money and have most of our events, even with the hurricane.”
Trey Honore, a mass communication senior and Delta Delta Delta’steam captain, said he was very happy with the turnout.
Honore said everyone seemed to have a good time and reallyenjoyed themselves.
“I’m glad the hurricane didn’t hurt the turnout,” Zumo said.”Thanks to local business and sororities who supported us, theevent was great.”
