While many bowls are awaiting the final BCS standings and conference championship games to be over to decide, here is The Reveille’s projections for all 28 college football bowls.
*Team has accepted bid to bowl
FedEx Orange Bowl, Miami, Jan. 4, 8 p.m., ABC — USC (11-0) vs. Auburn (11-0)
The skinny: Somehow, some way the Tigers will sneak into the No. 2 spot and play the Trojans. They will have to move up to No. 2 in both polls and hope OU looks really bad or loses the Big XII Championship game.
Other possibilities: The USC/Oklahoma title game that most of the college football world is anticipating is the only other alternative.
Nokia Sugar Bowl, New Orleans, Jan. 3, 8 p.m., ABC — Oklahoma (11-0) vs. Virginia Tech (8-2)
The skinny: The Hokies can get in with a win against Miami, but the Hurricanes could end up here as well. Either way, the ACC champion should play in the Superdome.
Other possibilities: Auburn or Tennessee are the only other teams that can play here because the SEC champion is obligated to play in New Orleans. It likely would be Auburn if the Tigers are not No. 1 or No. 2 in the BCS.
Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Calif., Jan. 1, 5 p.m., ABC — Cal (9-1) vs. Michigan (9-2)
The skinny: Cal will get in as a BCS at-large with a win over Southern Miss, and the Rose Bowl will want to have the Wolverines back to create the Big Ten, PAC-10 match-up.
Other possibilities: If Cal loses to Southern Miss, Texas will take the last at-large spot. The Rose Bowl gets the first pick after the Orange Bowl, and the Longhorns may be an attractive alternative against Michigan.
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Tempe, Ariz., Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m., ABC — Utah (11-0) vs. Pittsburgh (7-3)
The skinny: The Utes are a virtual lock to get to Tempe after finishing the regular season undefeated. The Fiesta probably will be forced to take the Big East champion after the other bowls take their picks.
Other possibilities: Syracuse could take Pitt’s spot if the Panthers lose to South Florida, which would create a tie for the Big East lead.
Capital One Bowl, Orlando, Fla., Jan. 1, 1 p.m., ABC — *Iowa (9-2) vs. LSU (9-2)
The skinny: The Hawkeyes are in and the bowl representatives really want LSU fans to travel to Orlando.
Other possibilities: If Auburn loses to Tennessee in the SEC Championship game, it will wind up here. The bowl also could take a 9-2 Georgia team or even Tennessee, but that seems unlikely.
SBC Cotton Bowl, Dallas, Jan. 1, 11 a.m., Fox — Texas (10-1) vs. Tennessee (9-2)
The skinny: The Longhorns will be back in Dallas, the site of their only loss this season, unless Cal loses.
Other possibilities: LSU could be here for a 2003 rematch with UT if the Capital One has to take Auburn or decides on Georgia. The Bulldogs also are a strong possibility. Texas A&M would be the only other Big XII team here and only would get it if Texas gets in the BCS.
Outback Bowl, Tampa, Jan. 1, 11 a.m., ESPN — *Wisconsin (9-2) vs. Georgia (9-2)
The skinny: The Volunteers should end up here by default, unless they shock the world and upset Auburn. The Outback gets the first choice of a team from the SEC East, and the Bulldogs look more appealing right now. Tennessee struggled against two of the worst teams in the SEC in its last two games and will start an inconsistent quarterback in Rick Clausen.
Other possibilities: The Outback could take Tennessee instead of Georgia or even take LSU if the Cotton or Capital One reject the Tigers.
Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, Atlanta, Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m., ESPN — Miami (9-2) vs. Florida (7-4)
The skinny: The Gators are solid here with a 7-4 record. South Carolina is not going to a bowl and the Peach generally likes a team from the SEC East.
Other Possibilities: Virginia Tech would replace Miami if the Hurricanes beat them Saturday. Florida State likely is not going to be here because of its recent game against Florida.
Toyota Gator Bowl, Jacksonville, Fla., Jan. 1, 12:30 p.m., NBC — *West Virginia (8-3) vs. Florida State (8-3)
The skinny: Both of these teams had high expectations for this year and many thought the Mountaineers and Seminoles would be in BCS Bowls.
Other possibilities: WVU is in. FSU cannot win the ACC title, but the Gator Bowl could invite the Miami/Virginia Tech loser.
Liberty Bowl, Memphis, Dec. 31, 3:30 p.m., ESPN — *Louisville (10-1) vs. Boise State (11-0)
The skinny: Many people are hyping this as one of the better post-season games this year. The Cardinals already are in and the Broncos are just about in. For a while, it seemed Boise possibly could grab the last at-large spot in the BCS, but after coming in at No. 8 in the latest standings, they appear headed to Memphis.
