Student Government hosted its annual haunted house at the Student Union on Oct. 30 to kick off the Halloween festivities this year. The event drew in students from all walks of life, featuring attendees dressed as Beetlejuice, The Lorax, Freddy Fazbear and more.
This year marks the second annual haunted house at LSU, with more to come. Last year the event had an impressive turnout, which meant some upgrades for this year. The event was located in the twisting hallways of the Union Theatre dressing rooms, a perfect spot for scare actors to pop out at any corner. Student Government partnered with Auxiliary Services, meaning it had more volunteers and resources to create a bigger, better and scarier haunted house.
Event organizer and director of student entertainment Iyanna Robinson wanted to organize an event that was fun and easily accessible for all students.
“My inspiration for creating the event is rooted in my experience freshman year as an out-of-state student with no vehicle,” Robinson said. “There were a lot of activities in Baton Rouge that I didn’t have access to, so it was really important for me to create events and experiences that students living on or near campus could easily attend at no cost.”
The event drew in large crowds of thrill seekers, lining up outside the Union Theatre waiting for their turn to get spooked. Although the line was long at times, event coordinators provided chips and soda for those waiting.
The house was split into five rooms. The experience kicked off with a twisted carnival-themed room featuring creepy clowns lit with a dim red light welcoming you in. As you walk deeper, the sudden cries of a girl in doll makeup catch guests off guard.
The graveyard-themed bathroom was where the screams of guests ahead and behind could be heard at full blast. Then came the crime scene room, strewn with caution tape, blood splatters and an ominous body outline on the floor. Sitting on a chair in this room was a woman covered in blood who when approached let out a blood-curdling scream that left most guests terrified.
The next room was a spider-infested dressing room which was an overall fan favorite for the deranged “Cat in the Hat” actor who crawled around the floor.
The haunted house concluded with an eerie blood-covered bathroom with spiders crawling up the walls. A tiger awaited behind the door to pounce on guests after they entered, giving them one more scare before they left. Attendees were filled with laughter despite the terror inside.
It was clear that Robinson’s goal of offering a fun and affordable activity for students was achieved. The energy in the Student Union was palpable and students were antsy with anticipation for the fun of Halloween.
The haunted house wasn’t the only spooky event at the Student Union this week. On Halloween day the union hosted a trick or treat event and costume contest. Winners of the costume contest will be determined via votes on the Student Union Instagram, so be sure to tune in to cast your vote.
Last year’s winner dressed up as the know-it-all kid from the Polar Express movie. Some honorable mentions have to go to the ghosts of Greek Life and a “Star Wars” inspired Sith Lord.
