LSU Greek Life spends countless hours every year creating intricate designs for the Homecoming pomping boards. The boards are put on show in each yard of a sorority house and are made by rolling colorful tissue paper into the smallest spheres. This year’s Homecoming theme was 100 Years of Tiger Stadium.
The artwork has been on display since Thursday, Oct. 10 and at the end of the week, the top three lawn structures are named. Here are our top five favorites:
1. Delta Delta Delta, Sigma Nu and Beta Theta Pi
Delta Delta Delta, Sigma Nu and Beta Theta Pi were placed first in the 2024 Homecoming lawn structure competition, and it’s easy to see why. The board is one of the biggest on Sorority Row and definitely the best.
The sorority and two fraternities teamed up to create a skyline of Tiger Stadium, with most of the space being taken up by the words “100 Years of Death Valley”. Inside each letter of ‘Death Valley’ are detailed images of players, cheerleaders and dancers cheering on the sideline.
From the lack of crooked letters and unproportionable bodies, it is clear that this structure took hard work, creativity and lots of tissue paper.
2. Delta Zeta and Pi Kappa Alpha
Delta Zeta and Pi Kappa Alpha embraced Death Valley’s 100th anniversary by going back in time to show off each previous logo of LSU. The timeline is placed at the bottom of the board and begins in 1955, making its way through time until 2014.
The rest of the structure is filled with the most color out of any board. The background fades from a white to yellow to blue ombre pattern and the top has fireworks coming off each side of the board. Death Valley is placed directly in the middle with a massive Mike the Tiger reaching over the stadium. This detailed pomping board has so much to see, making it one of the best to look at.
3. Zeta Tau Alpha and Kappa Alpha
Fireworks were a common theme in this year’s Homecoming pomping boards. Zeta Tau Alpha teamed up with Kappa Alpha to shape its board into Tiger Stadium with fireworks coming up from behind the jumbotron, exactly how it looks in real life.
LSU Greek Life voted this structure third in its ranking. Points may have been deducted from its asymmetrical stadium replica; however, the eye of the tiger logo on the jumbotron is accurate.
4. Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Sigma
Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Sigma are up next with its 3D-looking Homecoming board. Tiger Stadium is placed behind Garrett Nussmeier throwing a football towards a player on a rival team. The outline of Nussmeier is clean with a shadow, giving the player depth.
The entire board makes sense for the theme of this year’s Homecoming until the odd black background is noticed. The misty scene randomly grows over the board from around the corners and looks as if the sorority and fraternity did not have enough time to finish those pieces.
5. Kappa Kappa Gamma, Sigma Alpha and ACACIA
Kappa Kappa Gamma, Sigma Alpha and ACACIA had a massive structure, just like the first place winners; however they are only placed on the list as an honorable mention out of respect for embracing last year’s failure.
KKG’s 2023 pomping board turned into a viral meme, rather than a first place winner. The sorority attempted to recreate the national championship winners Paul Skenes and Angel Reese, but accidentally turned them into South Park characters.
The athletes were cut out of the board and stolen, but since then they have been returned to the sorority. Skenes and Reese are now separated, but placed on the balcony of the KKG house, which gives this board bonus points
The 2024 board was a big step forward for the sorority, with Tiger Stadium in the background during a sunset and Mike the Tiger being the center of attention.
