Following Hurricane Francine, it’s important to think about what to stock up on in the case of an intense hurricane. Hurricane season is not over until around Nov. 30, so preparedness is crucial for ensuring safety. These storms can be unpredictable, so having the right supplies on hand can make a big difference. Here’s a list of essential items to have before a hurricane according to LSU students.
Non-perishable Food: Stock up on canned goods, dry foods, and ready-to-eat meals that don’t require cooking. Aim for a three-day supply.
Portable charger: There’s a chance that the power could go out so make sure to have a portable device that can charge your phone.
Water: It’s important to stay hydrated, so grab a case of water before you hunker down for any storm. The last thing you need is to be stuck inside with nothing to drink.
Flashlights and batteries: Once again, electricity is not always guaranteed during a storm, especially in Louisiana. A flashlight can come in handy while you wait for power to be restored.
Hygiene products: Try to stock up on hygiene products you may need such as toilet paper, soap and hand sanitizer. In cases where you have to stay inside for an extended period of time, having these products will make your hurricane experience easier.
A binge-worthy show: While some hurricanes are dangerous and call for mass evacuation, others are less threatening and can make for a relaxing evening inside. No matter what streaming service you use, watching your favorite TV show or movie can make the hurricane experience go by faster.
Important documents: Before a hurricane approaches, you should try to gather all your important documents like social security cards and birth certificates in one place. Keep them in a waterproof seal if possible.
First aid kit: make sure you have a first aid kit in case someone gets injured. Before the storm approaches, make sure that your kit is full and has all the required items.
Gasoline: During hurricane season, you never know when you will have to get up and go. So to be a step ahead, make sure you fill your car with fuel in case you have to leave immediately.
