Political newcomer Emile “Sid” Edwards has defeated Sharon Weston Broome in the Dec. 7 runoff election for East Baton Rouge Mayor-President.
The result marks a stunning victory for Edwards, the football coach and dean of students at Istrouma High School, against the twice elected Mayor-President Broome in a campaign that saw crime and infrastructure emerge as central themes.
Unofficial results according to the Secretary of State have Edwards winning 54% of the vote to Broome’s 46%, with a 35.7% voter turnout.
The two candidates advanced to a runoff after neither candidate could garner a majority in the Nov. 5 election.
