A deadly attack in New Orleans leaves 15 dead and 30 injured after a driver plowed into New Year’s celebrators on Bourbon and Canal street.
The attack took place at 3:15 a.m., towards the end of New Year’s celebrations when the car intentionally plowed into the crowd.
The suspect has been identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42. Jabbar is not a New Orleans native.
Jabbar, who has been confirmed to have been wearing military gear during the attack, was killed during the altercation by law enforcement.
New Orleans Police Department superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick speculates on Jabbar’s goal of The attack.
“This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could…he was hellbent on creating the carnage that he did,” she said.
NOPD has confirmed that the car has a Texas license plate and contained explosives.
The truck also has a flag attached to the back, which investigators are looking into to help determine a motive.
Federal law enforcement is currently investigating whether or not this event was an act of terrorism.
Governor Jeff Landry issued a statement Wednesday morning.
“A horrific act of violence took place on Bourbon Street earlier this morning. Please join Sharon and me in prayer for all the victims and first responders on the scene. I urge people to avoid the area.”
The surviving victims have all been treated with medical care, and the two cops hot are said to be in stable condition.
