The LSU Women’s Basketball team competed in a tough defensive SEC matchup against Texas A&M on Sunday in the PMAC, where LSU would find a way to close out the game and come away with the victory.
The game started out slow on offense as both teams struggled to get it going early in the first quarter which shifted the game into a defensive matchup.
Before the end of the second quarter A&M guard Aicha Coulibaly drove to the basket on a possession and fell on her knee awkwardly. She would be helped up by A&M players and staff and she hopped off the court with one leg while being carried, but she did not return to the game.
Coach Kim Mulkey took time to address the injury on the court saying “My heart goes out to Coulibaly. I don’t know what her injury is, but it did not look good when she went down and we’ve all as coaches… had that happen and it just rips your heart out for kids.”
In the second half of the game Anneesah Morrow would help spark up some offense grabbing offensive rebounds and earning second chance points for the tigers.
Morrow would finish the game with 19 points and nine rebounds, one rebound shy of a double-double. Flau’Jae Johnson also came up big with clutch steals and buckets in the fourth quarter finishing with 22 points.
When asked about the team’s performance defensively against A&M Johnson said that while they are a good defensive team they are still things they can clean up and improve on.
“Me personally I feel like we could’ve did way better. We had a couple of defensive lapses when they got off near cues which is like three stops in a row… so we got to clean that up on defense… and they was at the free throw line, we put them at the free throw line.. You take away those free throws they score about ten points in the first half…”
While LSU is on a cold streak offensively they will have to figure things out sooner rather than later when they take on number 13th ranked Oklahoma on Thursday in the Pmac at 6:00pm.
