A historic snowstorm hit the South last week, with some places in Louisiana receiving up to 9 inches of snow—the most recorded since 1940.
Despite the snow frenzy, many locals began wondering how the unusual weather would impact the crawfish season, which starts next month.
Crawfish farmers are no strangers to extreme weather, but this time, they face snow. Last year, a severe drought killed many crawfish, raising prices due to the shortage.
Experts say the snowstorm will have minimal impact on the crawfish season. The storm arrived early enough that the crawfish will have time to become active again.
LSU Agricultural professor Blake Wilson says to not be worried though, “Temporary freezes are not much of a concern,” Wilson said. “If you have prolonged cold conditions during the months of December and January, those might delay the start of catching crawfish.”
This year, the crawfish season is expected to start more successfully than last year.
