Since 2003, LSU football has passed down jersey No. 18 to the next captain, and LSU baseball has done the same thing with jersey No. 8 since 2009.
But LSU softball doesn’t have a consistent captain.
There is never one officially named, but based on the legacy of football’s No. 18 and baseball’s No. 8, the No. 25 jersey should be passed down to the next captain because of the players who have worn it for three straight classes.
In 2011, Simone Heyward wore the No. 25 jersey. Heyward was a fixture in the lineup for both head coaches Yevette Girard and Beth Torina. She also had the clutch gene as early as her sophomore year.
Heyward was dominant in the postseason her sophomore year, hitting a 3-run double off Missouri’s All-American pitcher. She was 2-3 in the Women’s College World Series game against No. 3 Arizona State and did it again her senior year in the regional round. She went 3-3 and scored the go-ahead run in the Tucson Regional.
After Heyward graduated, pitcher Allie Walljasper opted to wear the No. 25.
Walljasper was an ace in the circle when she stepped on campus her freshman year, becoming a three-time NCFA All-American.
She led the Tigers to the WCWS three times back-to-back during her career. Walljasper even got some work done in the box with nine career home runs.
Following Walljasper, Georgia Clark wore the No. 25.
After her freshman year, Clark was a staple in the lineup. She played first base, was a designated player, and was known as the infield general. Clark was consistent with power, finishing her career with a .296 average and 43 home runs.
Heyward graduated in 2014, Walljasper in 2018 and Clark in 2023. All three players wore the No. 25, totaling nine straight years of someone wearing the 25 jersey, similar to the line of baseball players who wore the No. 8 after Mikie Matook in 2009.
If LSU softball were to delegate a “captain’s jersey” like baseball and football, No. 25 would be the clear option because of Heyward, Walljasper and Clark’s consistency as athletes.
