LSU baseball’s Instagram page posts a countdown to the first pitch of the Tigers’ baseball season. Instead of doing a typical “three more days until baseball season,” the social media team uses the players’ jersey numbers as opening day draws near.
“Wally Pontiff Jr. days ’til baseball season ,” the team posted to Instagram on Jan. 14, 2024.
The LSU baseball page was created in 2015, and the first countdown post was made in 2016.
The team posted to Instagram on Feb. 12, 2016, “One week until the Tigers open the season!”
The approach to Instagram changed a few times throughout the next few seasons.
To countdown the 2017 season, the media team started including the players and using their jersey numbers.
Hunter Newman was the first player to be highlighted in Dec. 2016, but the post differs from those recently posted. The post’s caption provides facts about Newman’s stats, and the graphic features Newman delivering a pitch with the No. 55 on it, announcing 55 days until the season.
This format stayed consistent through the next three seasons.
On Feb. 12, 2020, the countdown post began featuring fun facts about the team that included numbers to signify the countdown to the season. Two days before the season, the fun fact was that only two LSU pitchers had won a gold medal.
It wasn’t until 2023 that the media team began using the players’ names that we’re used to today. The LSU baseball media team posted a picture of No. 36, Eddy Furniss, on Instagram on Jan. 12, 2023.
“We’re Eddy Furniss days away from baseball season!” the post reads.
Since then, LSU baseball has used the player’s name to signify the days until the season’s first game. But with social media constantly changing, a new countdown could soon be on the horizon.
