LSU Softball secured their second win of the early season in dominating fashion against the Central Arkansas Bears by a final score of 10-0, sweeping the doubleheader with consecutive shutouts.
With enduring a considerable roster turnover in comparison to last season, as the team welcomes three freshmen and six highly-talented transfer players, the revamped Tigers roster provided a sneak peek of their offensive production to fans packed inside Tiger Park.
With two outs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, shortstop Avery Hodge managed to sneak a grounder past the diving Central Arkansas second baseman into center field.
This single would drive in two runners and were the first runs of the ballgame from either team.
However, in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Tigers unleashed an explosion of base knocks.
With five batters notching base hits (three of which being extra-base hits), the Tigers would plate seven runs and bat through their entire order.
Junior catcher Maci Bergeron launched the team’s first home run of the season for the purple and gold, sending a fastball right down the plate to the deepest part of the stadium and over the center field wall for a two-run home run.
Sophomore utility player Madox McKee collected three hits and scored twice from her efforts.
Infielders Avery Hodge and Sierra Daniel also contributed to this scoring barrage, each batting in two runs. Daniel rocketed a double down the left-field line to capture her two RBIs.
To put this offensive masterclass into perspective, eight of the nine eligible Tiger batters crossed home plate and scored a run over the course of this matchup.
The Tigers' junior right-handed pitcher Sydney Berzon went the distance for the complete-game shutout, throwing five strikeouts and only allowing two hits from the Central Arkansas lineup.
No. 10-ranked LSU Softball will look to continue this hot start in its upcoming matchups against the Charlotte 49ers and Central Arkansas on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., both at Tiger Park.
