LSU baseball is five short days away from its 2025 season opener against Purdue Fort Wayne.
While the Tigers’ 2024 season didn’t end with another College World Series run, there was no shortage of thrilling victories, clutch performances, and dramatic finishes.
Here’s a look at the five best team moments from the 2024 season.
5. Houston Classic Tournament Championship – March 3
Winning a midseason non-conference tournament might not carry the same weight as an SEC championship, but the Houston Classic was a crucial moment in LSU’s season.
The Tigers defeated Texas, Sam Houston and Texas State in the championship in a weekend that was able to put a lot of players to the test.
Luke Holman shutout Texas for nearly six innings, striking out 12 batters on the way to a 6-3 win.
Javen Coleman threw five scoreless innings in the title game, and Paxton Kling hit a three-run homer to put the game away. More than just another win, this tournament helped LSU settle into the season before their SEC gauntlet arrived.
4. LSU sweeps Ole Miss in Oxford – April 12-14
Winning an SEC series on the road is never easy, but sweeping a rival? That’s a statement. LSU dominated Ole Miss in Oxford, outscoring the Rebels 29-10 over three games in a commanding weekend performance.
The Tigers’ offense erupted, led by Jared Jones and Tommy White, who each launched home runs to fuel LSU’s scoring surge. On the mound, Luke Holman and Griffin Herring delivered strong appearances, while the rest of the bullpen kept the Rebels from finding any life at all.
This sweep was LSU’s first of the season, and the start of an exciting postseason run.
3. LSU stuns Kentucky in SEC Tournament thriller – May 22
In one of their most dominant performances of the season, LSU crushed No. 3 Kentucky, 11-0, in the SEC Tournament, mercy ruling them in eight innings.
The win was powered by elite pitching and an offensive explosion that came at just the right time.
Luke Holman set the tone, throwing six hitless innings, striking out seven, and keeping Kentucky completely off balance.
On the offensive side, Jared Jones and Tommy White each launched grand slams, while Hayden Travinski added a solo home run, sealing the mercy-rule victory.
In a game where almost everyone outside of LSU’s locker room thought that the results would have been flipped, the Tigers played some of their best baseball of the year.
The win extended LSU’s winning streak to five straight games and kept their SEC title hopes alive, again proving that when it matters most, the Tigers can compete with anyone in the country.
2. LSU takes weekend series Against Texas A&M – April 26-28
If there was ever a moment that defined LSU’s fight and resilience, it was their series win over Texas A&M in late April.
The Aggies entered the weekend as one of the hottest teams in the country, riding a wave of dominance in SEC play. LSU, on the other hand, was in need of a statement series — and that’s exactly what they delivered.
After splitting the first two games, the Tigers found themselves in trouble early in the rubber match, falling behind 5-0.
The turning point came in the seventh inning, when Tommy White stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. With one swing, he ripped a double into the gap, bringing in three runs and flipping the energy at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers never looked back, tacking on a few more insurance runs before shutting the door with lockdown pitching in the final frames.
It was the kind of weekend that shows people what the Tigers were made of, they had to fight and they found a way to win.
Beating a top-ranked Aggies squad not only gave LSU momentum heading into the final stretch of the season, but it proved they could go toe to toe with any team in the country. And when the Tigers needed a spark, Alex Box was there to bring them home.
1. Steven Milam walk-off in SEC Tournament semifinal – May 23
By far one of the most dramatic, edge of your seat wins of the 2024 season came in the SEC Tournament semifinal game against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
LSU goes down 8-0 to start the game, and it seems like the Tigers bag of tricks finally ran out, but they battled back.
Trailing 10-9 in the bottom of the ninth, Alex Milazzo’s bunt induced a full defensive breakdown for the Gamecocks. South Carolina third baseman Lee Ellis sailed the ball over the first baseman, sending Paxton Kling home with the tying run for the Tigers.
In the top of the 10th, the Tigers suffered a controversial call against them. After a 15-minute delay and a Jay Johnson ejection, South Carolina was awarded a run, taking the lead 11-10.
Down a run in the tenth, Travinski was walked after a pitch clock violation, awarding him the base.
Steven Milam, on a 1-1 count, delivers a home run shot that sent Travinski and himself around the diamond, walking it off for the Tigers. The freshman was mobbed at the plate by his teammates in what would be his first of two walk-offs that month.
The countdown is over. The next chapter of LSU baseball starts now.
Five days. 56 Games. 504 innings.
One shot. Omaha or bust.
