Recent political opposition to diversity, equity and inclusion programs has led to uncertainty among students. However, one organization is doing their part in making African American Men feel welcomed.
The Black Male Leadership Initiative (BMLI) was created to improve the retention, graduation, and participation rates of black men at LSU. The organization provides students with academic and leadership development in the hopes of training future leaders.
The men hold monthly events partnering with other campus organizations to teach and appreciate black culture. But, amidst the recent D-E-I backlash, it’s been hard for African Americans to appreciate their diversity. Over the past months, companies and organizations have begun to cut back on their DEI initiatives. These changes have made African Americans question their future resources and opportunities.
Luckily, the BMLI organization at LSU is proving to be stronger than ever in the midst of these events, providing resources and a safe space for African American men. President of BMLI, Deylon Froy, spoke on how DEI backlash has affected the organization.
“It just makes it a little bit more frustrating. But, at the same time, it allows us to come closer together and not be so frantic, and not to worry about what’s going on because we have that safe space,” Froy said.
The organization continues to host events with other organizations to promote a healthy and diverse environment.
Recently, their event with Black Women Leadership Association touched on healthy relationships and how to effectively communicate.
