There have been many questions surrounding the starting lineup on the LSU Football team with a new coach and a new quarterback. As the team comes off their first SEC win of the season, two true freshmen seem to have secured their spots on the line.
“He exceeded expectations,” Coach Brian Kelly said. “Look, you know, he’s not going to be perfect, but he’s active, he’s got great feet and he’s a great open field tackler.”
Will Campbell and Emery Jones both earned a starting position at offensive tackle against Mississippi State which marks the first time in school history for two true freshmen.
“Look, everyone’s got to earn their opportunity,” Coach Kelly said. “But these two are the best players at their positions and clearly earned their right to start at the positions at which they’re at right now.”
They both have proven they will be key assets to the offensive line as the season progresses. Although they are freshmen, they seem to fit right in with the veteran players.
“I think for those two guys it was an amazing opportunity for them to showcase their talents and what they’ll be able to do for us for the rest of the season,” veteran offensive lineman Charles Turner said. “Those two guys I think stepped up a tremendous amount. Of course, we still all have to get better.”
As the team prepares to take on New Mexico, Campbell and Jones will have to continue to play to their strengths and eliminate mistakes such as penalties due to miscommunication, which was a detrimental factor in the game against Mississippi State.
