It was a victorious opening day of softball season for LSU as they defeated the Nicholls State Colonels 8-0.
After an uneventful first inning, Raeleen Gutierrez hit the first home run of the season to right field in the second.
The third was inning was all Purple and Gold, as McKenzie Redoutey tripled to left field leaving Ali Newland and Taylor Pleasants scoring unearned. With a Karli Petty single to second base, Redoutey also scored unearned putting LSU up 4-0.
In the fourth, the Bayou Bengals made their last offensive stretch, featuring a triple from Pleasants and a score on a throwing error followed by scores from Ciara Briggs, Gutierrez and Madilyn Giglio.
LSU pitcher Sydney Berzon kept the momentum she had all night and pitched a no-hitter in the top of the fifth. With collegiate softball’s eight-run rule, this sealed the deal for a home victory on opening day.
The Tigers have a packed weekend as they will face Memphis and Pittsburgh back to back at the LSU Invitational.
