LSU Gymnastics took the SEC Champion title five years ago on March 23. Exactly five years later, they became champions again in the same building.
The Tigers trailed by .25 going into the fourth rotation, which for them was floor. Head Coach Jay Clark told media that he believed his group was in a good spot when they began warming up for the final challenge.
“We’re a pretty confident group on floor,” Clark said. “We gave away a little bit on bars and beam, not a whole lot, but just enough to make it interesting.”
Coach Clark also spoke to media about the performances of a few individual gymnasts and how each contributed to the win. Freshman Konnor McClain received a perfect 10 on balance beam and senior Haleigh Bryant received the all-around award for her consistent performance.
“I’m proud of all of them. I’m proud of freshman Konnor McClain, doing what she did on balance beam and Haleigh doing the things she did. KJ finally getting a score that is indicative of the performance she gives every single time on floor. It was a total group effort.”
Clark also mentioned his own emotions about coaching the LSU program and spoke to the character of the girls.
“We’re blessed,” Clark said. “We’re fortunate to have great kids. Their character, their integrity, you know. I’m blessed as a coach to be able to coach, I’m blessed as a coach to be at LSU. It’s a special place with special people in this state. I just give all my thanks to the Lord, because I’m blessed.”
The Purple and Gold will now prepare for regionals which are set to start on April 3.
