Brian Kelly spoke to the media following the Tigers’ fifth season-opening loss in a row. They fell to the USC Trojans 27-20 in Las Vegas in the Modelo Kickoff Classic at Allegiant Stadium.
Personal fouls by Kyren Lacy and Major Burns proved to be costly for LSU. By the end of the night, they had 10 total penalties for 99 yards.
“The penalties are selfish,” Kelly said. “Both of them lead to scores. They’re undisciplined penalties. They fall back on me.”
On top of penalties, LSU also struggled in the red zone. Kelly mentioned how his offense and defense did not play complementary football, and how the defense could not pick up the slack for the offense when they fell short.
Coach Kelly raised his voice and slammed his fist down on the table, saying that for the first time in his time at LSU, he is angry with his team.
“We’re sitting here again talking about the same things,” Kelly said. “About not finishing when you have an opponent in a position to put them away.”
Unlike last season, however, the defense was not the problem for the Tigers tonight. Although they still are not playing to the level Kelly would like, their performance tonight showed their improvement.
“I think our defensive tackle play was much better,” Kelly said. “I think our edge play was better. I think we tackled pretty good. They played really really hard.”
Overall, Kelly acknowledged his own shortfalls as a coach, taking accountability for their lack of discipline.
“I’m so angry about it,” Kelly said. “I got to do something about it. I’m not doing a good enough job as a coach. I got to coach them better because it’s unacceptable for us not to have found a way to win this football game. It’s ridiculous. It’s crazy.”
