LSU fell short in their fifth season opener in a row Sunday night in the Modelo Kickoff Classic at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
The Tigers lost to the USC Trojans 27-20 in a nail-biter that came down to a USC touchdown with eight seconds left on the clock.
Garrett Nussmeier attempted to throw down the field after the Trojans took the lead, but his pass was intercepted by USC linebacker Mason Cobb.
The Trojans got on the board first with a Woody Marks 2-yard rushing touchdown, but the Tigers matched it soon after with a 19-yard pass to Kyren Lacy.
Both teams scored field goals on their next drives, making it a tied ball game at 10-10 at half.
The LSU defense was able to hold the Trojans to a field goal on their second drive of the second half and then take the lead with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Anderson.
USC was able to get the upper hand with two back to back touchdown drives while holding LSU to only one more field goal.
Although the team was disappointed to lose their fifth consecutive season opener, not all hope for the season is lost. Nussmeier performed well in his first regular season start, completing 76% of his passes for 304 yards.
The Tigers will host Nicholls State in Death Valley for their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 7 where they hope to get in the win column.
