Baton Rouge residents living on Brightside Drive near River Road are worried about their safety after reported break-ins across the area.
With many college students living in this part of town, student safety is a major question mark.
LSU students and roommates Karah DiVincenti and Franchesca Ruiz caught a terrifying attempted break-in on their own Ring Doorbell. DiVincenti says the incident occurred around 4 a.m. when she and Ruiz were home.
“Me and her were both asleep upstairs,” DiVincenti said. “I didn’t hear anything, wasn’t woken up. And then I found out by her calling me the next day as I was going over to my parents’, and was like ‘go look at the Ring.’”
Luckily, for the pair of roommates, their dog Benji was home to scare off the would-be-intruder with his loud barking.
DiVincenti and Ruiz are not the only ones experiencing safety issues. They say others in surrounding neighborhoods have had eerily similar encounters.
“We’re on like the Ring neighbors kind of community thing where people can upload videos, and we’ve seen this man multiple times around the area trying to break into people’s houses,” Ruiz said. “I ended up posting the video on neighbors of the man trying to break into our house and people recognized him.”
Ruiz contacted the police almost immediately after discovering the video, but received little to no help aside from filing a report. With no help from BRPD, the two took their safety into their own hands by installing an alarm system.
The LSU students recommend that all of their neighbors do the same.
