LSU Baseball Head Coach Jay Johnson was ejected in Sunday’s 12-2 loss to Florida, losing LSU their second straight SEC series to start the year.
Coach Johnson says the incident that led to his ejection was a lack of enforcement of warnings for unsportsmanlike conduct. LSU First Baseman Jared Jones got into it with Florida Pitcher Jac Caglianone after hitting a home run. This led to both teams getting warnings.
Later in the inning, Caglianone said something to LSU Catcher Hayden Travinski after striking him out but was not reprimanded for it.
“”Why are we giving a warning if you’re not going to enforce the rule,” Johnson said.
“I don’t know if the umpire deemed whatever he said was not worthy of being ejected, but to me there’s no point in giving a warning if you’re not going to do something about it when something happens 30 seconds after you issue the warning.”
Johnson says that he plans to stay in the game from now on. He goes on to talk about how disappointed he was in the team’s effort and competitive nature later in the game, especially after he was thrown out.
“On a TV that was really tough to watch,” Johnson said. “That was like, you know, you’re dead and then you’re actually getting to watch your life play out, and like I would be disappointed if I was actually dead and I was watching that happen.”
The Tigers will play against Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday. Then they gear up for a road trip to Fayetteville to play Arkansas, who is expected to be the No. 1 team in the country.
