Brian Kelly spoke with the media after LSU won their first game of the season, defeating Grambling State 72-10 Saturday. Before discussing the game, Kelly gave an injury update on Grambling State Linebacker Jaquavis Richmond.
“He is going to have surgery, it appears there is good news in terms of him having feeling,” Kelly said. “I wanted to make sure we talked about that…the game is pale in comparison to that.”
Tight End Mason Taylor limped to the sideline in the first half of the game. Kelly quickly told the media that Taylor suffered an ankle sprain.
Continuing on offense, LSU’s running game looked promising Saturday as Running Back Logan Diggs had a standout game in his first appearance wearing purple and gold.
“We knew what we were getting with Logan,” Kelly said. “I think we saw the kind of back that is going to help us.”
The game was LSU’s second consecutive week two matchup against an in-state Historically Black University. The Tigers faced off against the Southern Jaguars for the first time ever in 2022. This was also the Tigers first matchup against Grambling State.
“There will be that day, when I am sitting on the beach and reading the book,” Kelly said. “This will be a great chapter; To play these two teams because they are historic.”
Second string Quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier, saw the field in Saturday’s matchup going four for six in LSU’s big win against Grambling State. Nussmeier acknowledged the improvements the offensive line made after last weeks loss against Florida State.
“They handled their business, pushing at the line of scrimmage and when you do that it is real easy,” said Nussmeier.
Nussmeier also credited Quarterback Jayden Daniels’ role in the game after Daniels threw for 269 yards and five touchdowns.
“He went through his reads and made great throws,” said Nussmeier. “He led us well and brought us some energy, that’s what we needed today.”
Running Back, Logan Diggs, made his first appearance as a Tiger against Grambling State. Diggs rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown.
“It felt really good, especially being able to come back home,” said Diggs. “To be able to wear those colors and put on for my state.”
During camp this summer, Diggs nursed a hamstring injury which prevented him from playing week one game against Florida State. Since overcoming the injury, Diggs is expected to help lead the Tigers to more victories over opponents this season.
“I feel great,” said Diggs.
