LSU Gymnastics battled with the Oklahoma Sooners in an instant SEC classic Friday Night in the PMAC.
The No. 1 ranked Sooners had already beaten LSU once this season but the Tigers were hungry for a win. The Tigers would take this meet with a season high score of 198.050. The Sooners put up a 197.425 in the PMAC.
Vault standouts for the Tigers included freshman Kailin Chio and senior Haleigh Bryant who both went 9.950 on their first event of the night.
On bars the Tigers struggled to put up big scores. Chio secured the highest score for the team – a 9.900 followed by fellow freshman Lexi Zeiss’ 9.875.
Oklahoma freshman Lily Pederson helped the Sooners kick off the meet right with the top score on bars, a 9.925.
On vault for the Sooners, senior Faith Torrez led the team with a 9.975.
Going into the second half of the meet, both teams were tied at 98.850.
Senior Sierra Ballard took the leadoff spot on beam for the Tigers and executed to near perfection, earning herself a 9.950 to match her personal best on the event. Kailin Chio and Konnor McClain both scored a 9.925 on beam, but the Tigers still trailed by .075 going into the final rotation.
The Tigers put on a masterclass in floor exercise. Freshman Kaliya Lincoln made her debut in the leadoff spot with a 9.925, followed by Sierra Ballard who matched her score.
Sophomore Amari Drayton got a perfect score form one judge, but averaged to a 9.950. Haleigh Bryant closed out the night in the electrified PMAC with a 9.950 leading her team to an overall season high score.
The Tigers will face Oklahoma once again in March at the SEC Championships in Birmingham. This will be the first time the two have faced each other in a championship since Oklahoma joined the conference.
Until then, LSU looks ahead with hopes of securing another road win as they prepare to face Kentucky Friday, February 21.
