On Monday, LSU head coach Matt McMahon spoke to the media before the team’s matchup with South Carolina on Tuesday, where he spoke on dual-sport athlete Trey’Dez Green.
The 6-foot-7, 245-pound forward will be stepping away from the team to focus on his academics and rejoin the team later.
McMahon did not provide a timetable for Green’s return.
After a fall semester spent on the gridiron, Green debuted for the Tigers on the hardwood on Jan. 25 in Tuscaloosa against No. 4 Alabama, where he recorded two points on 1-for-2 (50%) shooting, with three rebounds and a block.
Through his first 40 minutes of collegiate basketball, Green shot 5-for-12 (41.7%) from the field, made one of his only two free throws, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked a shot on a shot on a smooth transition play that led to his first NCAA bucket against the Crimson Tide. He made for a significant threat on the boards that LSU no longer possesses.
Tigers football head coach Brian Kelly has previously stated that Green continues to lift weights with the team and is still expected to put on pads in the Fall; the same can’t be said for McMahon’s men.
The loss of Green already adds to the impactful list of key faces missing from this lineup for months: Tyrell Ward due to personal reasons and Jalen Reed from a torn ACL.
LSU, sitting at 13-12 overall with only a 2-10 record in conference play, will look to battle their way back with six games to go when they host the Gamecocks on Tuesday night at the PMAC.
