The LSU Tigers Softball team remains perfect after sweeping the Purple and Gold Challenge competition during the weekend. The team moved to 10-0 after facing multiple top-25 teams early in the year.
The team played against the 17th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies, the 21st-ranked Northwestern Wildcats, and the UT Arlington Mavericks. Throughout the five games that were played, LSU’s balanced attack of strong pitching and complementary hitting formulated a plan for victory.
The pitching from this team has been nothing but outstanding and is getting wide recognition. Freshman standout Jayden Heavener continues to tear it up on the mound and keeps developing in her game. As well as her teammates, Tatum Clopton and Sydney Berzon contributed heavily this weekend, and all have allowed a total of 23 hits in 5 games.
“I think this weekend helps us tremendously. It puts us in the pressure situation that we are going to see in SEC play,” LSU pitcher Sydney Berzon said.
The offense has looked sharp for the Tigers up to this point of the season. On Sunday, Catcher Maci Bergeron lighted up from the plate, going 3-4 at bat and scoring two runs. She credits the team’s success to the coaching staff and the hard practices throughout each week.
“The things we’re doing at practice have prepared us for the pitcher that have been facing in the game and it working out for us,” LSU catcher Maci Bergeron said.
As they sit at the 7th spot of the rankings, the team continues to show why they are one of the best teams in the country, Coach Beth Torina praises the team’s efforts thus far and remains optimistic about moving forward and the direction they are following.
“I’m proud of this team, and I think they’re doing so many things well,” Coach Beth Torina said. “It just feels like there’s all this hope for this team and no matter the situation they are in, they are going to find a way to win.”
This weekend featured more of a momentum build-up heading into next week as the Tigers begin to transition into mid-season form. Their next challenge is prepping for the LSU Invitational next weekend, and look to stay perfect after the tournament affair.
