As Mardi Gras approaches, the Krewe of Freret is stepping up its efforts to go green by swapping plastic beads for more sustainable throws.
The krewe is introducing reusable cups, custom necklaces and unique keepsakes to reduce waste, all while maintaining the lively tradition of the season.
The effort is personal for sustainability advisor and Krewe of Freret member, Bobby Hjortsberg, whose commitment to environmental impact has shaped the krewe’s new direction.
“An entire, huge oversized box truck full of plastic beads came in last year, and all of those have been eliminated,” Hjortsberg said. “Every single thing we throw is something that you would probably even pick up off the ground. In fact, everything you would pick up off the ground, honestly.”
The Krewe of Freret is proud of the positive change it has already seen, with a significant reduction in plastic waste from past years. Their goal is to continue leading the way in making Carnival more eco-friendly while keeping the spirit of Mardi Gras alive.
The Krewe of Freret will roll Uptown in New Orleans on Feb. 22 at 3:30 p.m., presenting their theme, “Time Is on Our Side.” Be sure to catch their one-of-a-kind throws and join in the celebration!
