President Donald Trump is working towards getting rid of the Department of Education which could bring some big changes to the United States.
The Department of Education was established in 1979 to help oversee federal funding and provide more higher education accountability.
Critics are arguing that by removing such a big department, it could reduce funding for schools that really need it.
The director of the School of Education at Louisiana State University, Eugene Kennedy, expresses how he feels about the attempted attack on education.
“Attempts to undermine education can be a big threat to all students. I do not find it necessary to take away something that has been there,” Kennedy said.
Students who rely on federal funding such as loans, grants and even work study may be affected due to inaccessible funds to provide.
While this plan has not gone through yet, many administrators, on the state and local levels, are getting laid off more and more everyday.
Kennedy shares his vision for the future of education and what he hopes will come out of it.
“The future of education lies in accessibility and innovation. I also want to see more of the state administrations start to work more on a local level,” Kennedy said.
The timing of when Trump plans to sign the executive order is still unknown and the future of Education is still up in the air.
