Greek life is a prominent part of LSU’s rich culture, with over 7,000 members spanning four councils. In total, members have accumulated more than 72,400 hours of community service.
However, Greek life often carries a negative connotation due to party stereotypes. Members are taking steps to change that narrative.
Each spring, Greek life hosts a retreat called “Empower.” It is a leadership getaway for first-year members seeking to expand their leadership skills.
Although each chapter may differ, the foundation remains the same: They offer professional development events such as resume workshops, mock interviews, and networking fairs.
Empower co-lead Amanda MacFayden spoke about the benefits of being in Greek life.
“I got my first internship through my sorority,” MacFayden said. “It was one of the best connections I have made for my career.”
More than 50 percent of fraternity and sorority alumni secured employment within two months of graduation, a significant contrast to the 36 percent of non-affiliated students who experienced the same success.
This statistic highlights the professional advantages gained through fraternity and sorority involvement.
Moreover, roles in areas like finance and risk management provide students with invaluable experience in managing large budgets, solving complex problems, and working collaboratively as part of a team.
These skills are highly sought after by employers, making fraternity and sorority membership a powerful asset in today’s competitive job market.
The skills and connections gained through fraternity and sorority involvement not only enhance personal growth but also significantly improve career prospects.
