LSU softball played the University of Southern Mississippi for the second time on Saturday at 4 P.M.
It was another chilly night in Tiger Park, and the Tigers finished the game cold and victorious, winning 12 – 5. Right after their win, they had to roll right into their next game against Nicholls.
Jayden Heavener closed out the last game against Southern Miss. and opened against them. It was not her best pitching performance. Before she was taken out, she let five golden eagles walk.
Tatum Clopton finished the remainder of the game, and shut down Southern Miss.’s batters. She allowed zero hits during her time in the circle. Clopton’s performance was especially remarkable because this is the first time she has pitched since 2022. The redshirt senior suffered some injuries, keeping her off the field.
Early in the game, Danica Coffey hit her first homerun of the season. But, Southern Miss. set the tone first when Kayce Bennett scored a homerun in the second inning, allowing Natalie Taylor and VRyanna Valdivia to score as well.
The tigers gained their first lead in the bottom of the fourth, and the score was 6 – 5. From there the Southern Miss. defense struggled to contain LSU. The tigers would score three runs in the next two innings.
The golden eagles could not respond and failed to put any points on the board for the remainder of the game.
