After their ninth-inning comeback came up just short in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader for their first loss of the year, LSU baseball would dust themselves off, pull on their championship golds, and look to take their second of two weekend series this year.
After struggling to find clutch hits in the first game of the doubleheader, LSU would amend that in game two, going six for 16 with runners on, including a Josh Pearson double to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, and LSU wouldn’t look back from there.
A Jared Jones two-RBI single in the fourth would cap off a three-run frame for the Tigers, one of the five runs batted in Jones would rack up in the game. Coach Jay Johnson spoke on the team’s improved situational hitting in game two, and how he trusts the guys in his lineup.
“We matched up a little better,” Johnson said comparing the two lineups he put out. “I have confidence in anyone we put in the lineup.”
On the other side of the ball, it would be cruise control for Redshirt Sophomore Chase Shores in his second start back from Tommy John surgery. The righty went five full innings giving up only three hits and no runs, while tallying six strikeouts.
“Gotta just stick to my process and keep doing what I’ve been doing,” Shores explained after his outing. “I just have to go take care of business.”
The lockdown pitching would continue in the Tiger bullpen as Wofford transfer Zac Cowan would pitch two innings of flawless relief. While Cowan kept the door shut, the Tiger offense would explode for a combined seven runs in the sixth and seventh to put the game out of reach and secure the series for the Tigers with a 12-1 win.
LSU is back in action Monday night for their rescheduled tilt with the Nicholls State Colonels in Alex Box at 6 p.m.
