Although LSU’s Beach Volleyball Team kicked off their season this weekend in Hattiesburg, Mississippi at the Beach Burg Invitational, all eyes are currently on one new player.
Camryn Chatellier, a former 2023 Gatorade Player of the Year and Louisiana native, is already making waves in the sand for the Purple and Gold after going 5-0 in all of her games at the Beach Burg Invitational.
As a freshman, Chatellier is determined to help the Sandy Tigs, but she would have never chosen LSU if it weren’t for a few things that stood out to her about the program.
“I just felt like LSU stood out a lot because they really worried about the person rather than just how I played volleyball,” Chatellier said. “They talked about how the team was more of a family and that they just took care of everyone around them.”
Even though she is playing for her teammates and for the three letters across her chest, there is one person who is the reason why she wears the number on the back of her jersey: her great-grandmother.
“I had always worn No.3 without a meaning,” Chatellier said. “But then my senior year of high school, my great-grandmother passed away on February 3, so I feel like it has a bigger meaning to me now.”
“She was truly my biggest fan and did not miss a game ever and loved watching me. I feel like I just want to carry her with me everywhere I go, like through my number and just how I carry myself.”
To know her is to love her is something her late great-grandmother would say about Chatellier, along with Chatellier’s teammate Gabi Bailey. Bailey, a 2024 AVCA Second Team All-American, shared how Chatellier is already making a huge difference on the court and in the locker room.
“Camryn is an amazing teammate,” Bailey said. “She is so positive and makes everyone feel so good when you’re around her. I think it is apparent that she worked really hard before she got here and it seems like it’s really paying off. We love having her here.”
As all eyes are on the young freshman, Chatellier and her team have their eyes set on one goal: winning the NCAA Tournament towards the end of Spring.
LSU Beach Volleyball and Chatellier hope to take their momentum from their dominating performances from the Beach Burg Invitational into this weekend as they host teams for the Tiger Beach Challenge.
