LSU Baseball defeated in-state rival Nicholls State on Monday night in a 13-3 rout.
The Tigers managed to run-rule the Colonels in seven innings, scoring the final run on a wild pitch.
LSU’s best players stepped up in big ways to lead the team to a win. Both Jared Jones and Steven Milam cranked big home runs to get out ahead early and maintain a big lead. Jones also stole second base twice in crucial moments. That aggressiveness was key to the Tigers’ win.
Coach Jay Johnson was very pleased with his team’s performance. He’s proud of the way they have bounced back in the two games following a stinging loss to Omaha on Saturday.
“We were locked in tonight,” Johnson said after the win. “They just need to play baseball, and I think we’ve seen that.
Johnson was also happy with the performance of starting pitcher William Schmidt. The freshman threw 4.2 innings with one earned run and three strikeouts.
“He is a great pitcher and he’s gonna be a great pitcher,” Coach Johnson said. “I can’t wait to get him on the mound again.”
The Tigers now gear up for a road trip out west through Texas. Johnson says he is excited for the trip and expects the team to grow closer.
“I can’t wait to get on the plane. The weather is gonna be great.”
