LSU Greek Life is doing more than providing social events to the Greek community. They are making an impact on the Baton Rouge community.
William Grand, a Kappa Alpha Order fraternity member, realized how much food was being thrown away in his fraternity and other Greek houses down the row each night. This was the birth of his on-campus organization Giving Greek.
Grand and Giving Greek members turn leftover food into thousands of meals for the homeless, creating their motto “Making a difference in the community one meal at a time.”
“We want to bridge the gap between the community and Greek Life. We felt like there was a little bit of a disconnect. I came across this idea two years ago and it has really fostered into something much bigger than I ever thought it would be,” said Grand.
Every Wednesday, Greek members meet in the front of the Lod Cook Hotel on LSU’s campus to collect all extra food, and deliver it to the Saint Vincent de Paul Homeless Shelter. Over the past two years, they have donated over 6,000 meals to the shelter.
Grand is looking forward to expanding the organization on campus to make an even bigger impact.
