As Mardi Gras festivities approach, LSUPD Chief Marshall Walters is offering important safety tips to help students enjoy the celebration responsibly. With large crowds and lively parades, he says safety should be a top priority for all attendees.
Here are Walters’ tips for a safe and successful Mardi Gras.
Parade Safety:
Walters advises students to attend parades in groups and keep track of each other throughout the event. Walking on well-lit streets and avoiding empty areas can help prevent dangerous situations. Limit what you carry, including a small amount of cash, your ID, your health insurance card and one credit card. Carry items in front pockets or crossbody bags to deter pickpockets.
“Stay behind barricades and follow instructions from police and officials on the parade route,” Walters said. “Respect the horses and float riders, harassing them can result in removal from the event.”
Vehicle and Parking Safety:
Students are reminded to lock their cars and avoid leaving keys inside, as unlocked vehicles are often targeted by thieves. Valuables also should not be left in plain sight if they must remain in a vehicle.
When using rideshare services, confirm the driver’s name and vehicle type through the app before getting in. Always ask the driver, “Who are you here for?” to verify their identity.
Only park in legal spaces, and avoid parking along parade routes or in New Orleans’ French Quarter, as vehicles parked illegally will be towed.
Alcohol Safety:
For those 21 and older who plan to drink, Walters stresses the importance of drinking responsibly. Designate a sober driver, stay hydrated with water and never accept drinks from strangers or allow others to handle your drinks.
Additionally, do not drink and drive under any circumstances.
General Safety Reminders:
Walters encourages students to remain aware of their surroundings at all times. If you need help, locate a nearby police officer along the parade route or call 911 for assistance. Use the buddy system, and always communicate your plans with friends or family.
“By following these guidelines, students can enjoy Mardi Gras while staying safe,” Walters said. “Look out for one another and make smart decisions.”
