LSU Football held its fifth spring practice Saturday morning.
The team worked exclusively on tackling for the first time this spring, drilling 1v1’s with both lines. DJ Chester, Tyree Adams, Bo Bordelon and Weston Davis all stood out as powerful and physical lineman who could hold starting positions.
In the quarterback room, starter Garrett Nussmeier looked extremely accurate despite severe wind conditions. Sophomore transfer from Mississippi State and projected QB2, Michael Van Buren Jr took a few snaps and practiced handing off the ball.
Most drills involved run walkthroughs with all running backs.
Junior Kaleb Jackson looked fast and more confident on the field. Head coach Brian Kelly spoke after practice about how much he has improved in the offseason.
“Kaleb struggled last year with his size and volume and he’s been great this year,” Kelly said of the 6’0 235 lb Baton Rouge native.
Standout sophomore Caden Durham also got a few carries in drills. After battling a foot injury late last season, he looks balanced and fit as ever.
One of the most anticipated transfers for LSU was former Texas A&M tight end Donovan Green.
Coach Kelly spoke about Green and what he brings to the table, and why LSU wanted him so badly.
“The tight end position requires a couple of things. They’ve got to be able to block, they’ve got to be able to catch…they can’t be one dimensional, if they are then they become a specialist,” Kelly said.
“When we were looking to add to the Tight End room we wanted somebody who could do both and that’s what we found,” Kelly said.
“He can block, he can catch the football. He’s from the state, he knows this place really well and he’s passionate about LSU,” Kelly said.
LSU will open practice to the media again on Wednesday during practice No. 7.
