LSU Baseball Head Coach Jay Johnson spoke to the media Wednesday evening as he and his team look forward to their upcoming road series against the Texas Longhorns.
From the jump, Johnson wanted to credit Outfielder Ethan Frey on his strong hitting performances against Missouri and UNO and hopes he will continue that this upcoming weekend. Frey, a current junior and a member of the 2023 National Championship Team, has shown strong progressions throughout this season and has created a defined role in the team’s lineup.
“Toughness would be the word that I would use to describe Ethan (Frey),” Johnson said. “He always shows up here with a ton of maturity. Happy to see his success… just for him, but like it really really lifts our team.”
Although LSU has shown great road performances against teams like Dallas Baptist and Kansas State, the Texas Longhorns are going to be LSU’s first of many challenges to determine if they have what it takes to compete on the road in the SEC.
No. 5 Texas (17-2) has proven they have star-studded talent. Infielder Ethan Mendoza and Outfielder Will Gasparino are one of many players who have been impressive for the Longhorns this season. For Johnson, he believes that with plate-discipline and not giving the Longhorns free bases will help his Tigers get the job done.
“I expect to win,” Johnson said. “I believe in them that much in terms of … how they prepare, how they train, attention to detail and ability to respond. It doesn’t have to be perfect.”
No. 2 LSU will travel to Austin as they face No. 5 Texas in a three-game series. The matchup will start Friday at 7 p.m.
