LSU women’s tennis are heating up around the halfway point of the season following a comeback win over No. 25 South Carolina and a 7-0 sweep of Jackson State at home on Sunday.
The Tigers are currently ranked ninth in the country with a 16-2 record with six of those wins being ranked wins. Their two losses came at the hands of No. 7 Michigan, 0-4, at the ITA National Indoor Championships and a 2-4 loss to No. 1 Georgia at LSU on Friday.
Their ranked wins this season include a 4-1 win over No. 19 Florida, a 4-2 win over No. 6 UCLA, a pair of 4-0 sweeps over No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Tennessee, a 4-2 win over No. 18 Alabama and a 4-3 comeback win over No. 25 South Carolina.
In the match versus No. 1 Georgia, LSU’s No. 25 doubles team of Tilwith Di Girolami and Anita Sahdiieva defeated No. 70 Guillermina Grant and Anastasiia Lopata 6-0. With the No. 11 duo of Candace Brace and Kayla Cross taking down No. 13 Dasha Vidmanova and Mell Reasco 6-3 to secure the doubles point for LSU to take the 1-0 lead.
LSU then loses four of the five singles matches that were finished, with LSU’s No. 63 Kayla Cross versus Georgia’s No. 48 Anastasiia Lopata not finishing their match. This allowed Georgia to come back and take a 4-2 match win over the Tigers.
The Tigers started play on Sunday versus No. 25 South Carolina and found themselves in an early hole after dropping their doubles matchups. They turn around and claim four of the six single matchups to take the win 4-3 in an electric comeback.
The Tigers also played a second match on Sunday and swept Jackson State 7-0. They took wins in all the singles matchups and the doubles matchups that were finished. The match between LSU’s No. 25 duo Tilwith Di Girolami and Anita Sahdiieva versus Jackson State’s Isabela Benavides and Kayleigh Didderiens was not finished. LSU had an early 3-1 lead in that match.
The Tigers travel to Texas this weekend for a pair of top-15 matchups this weekend. They will face No. 13 Texas in Austin on Friday and No. 2 Texas A&M in College Station on Sunday.
