Many ride bikes for enjoyment, for exercise, or to relieve stress. But, members of Pi Kappa Phi at Northwestern State University are biking for a purpose.
Pi Kappa Phi’s philanthropy is the Ability Experience, and its mission is to raise awareness and support people with disabilities.
Michell Mayfield is a member of Phi Kappa Phi who is a part of this mission.
“Whether it is children or adults, physical or mental disabilities, it is all-encompassing for those with disabilities. It is really awesome,” said Mayfield.
What makes this mission special is just how many people it impacts. Members support those with disabilities not just in their community but across the United States. This summer, a group of about 50 members will take the Journey of Hope, which starts on the West Coast of the US and ends in Washington, D.C.
“We will bike from 7 AM to 3 PM, and that evening, we will have what we call a friendship visit,” said Mayfield.
During a friendship visit, members spend time with multiple organizations across America to spread support, raise money, and share smiles with those with disabilities.
“I am looking forward to being able to meet other people and get a different perspective on my life and other people’s lives,” said Mayfield, “the biking is only half of the trip; the other half is being able to connect with people across the country.”
In the US, 6.5 million Americans have developmental disabilities, but through the Journey of Hope, members are reaching and supporting as many people as possible.
